This case study outlines how CalvertHealth, an independent community health system in Maryland, addressed its challenges related to electronic health record (EHR) recovery. The hospital faced risks due to its rural location and the potential for natural disasters, which threatened patient data security. Previously, the hospital's EHR system had a Recovery Time Objective (RTO) of 48 to 72 hours, which was deemed inadequate. To improve this, CalvertHealth partnered with Healthcare Triangle to implement a Disaster Recovery and Information Access Continuity Strategy. The collaboration led to the migration of the EHR recovery site to the AWS cloud, utilizing Healthcare Triangle’s HITRUST Certified EHR Data Resiliency solution. This transition reduced the disaster RTO by 97%, significantly improved uptime, and enhanced data accessibility and security. The hospital benefited from a flexible, cost-effective solution that allowed for resource expansion as needed, ultimately leading to improved staff morale and confidence in the system.
