This technical report examines the capabilities of current CEOs in Fortune 500 companies with respect to their alignment with organizational success factors. A survey involving 1,033 CEOs and board members globally revealed that over a third of U.S. companies have CEOs lacking essential capabilities for success in the next two to three years. The report emphasizes the importance of effective succession planning, noting that only 25% of leaders prioritize it, and one-third lack key performance indicators for the process. The findings indicate a significant risk for companies that have reactive and under-resourced succession planning strategies. The analysis highlights that organizations with high alignment between succession planning practices and business strategies tend to perform better financially. Furthermore, it underscores the necessity for comprehensive CEO succession plans that consider internal candidate development while acknowledging the increasing trend of hiring CEOs externally. The report concludes that effective alignment and the right CEO are critical for navigating future organizational challenges.
