Decarbonisation Plans for Ski Tourism in Europe

This research article presents and discusses the decarbonisation plans of ski tourism operators in Switzerland and France, focusing on their effectiveness in addressing climate change challenges. It outlines the dual challenges posed by climate change to the ski industry, including the need to adapt to changing snow conditions and the imperative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The study highlights the significance of snowmaking as an adaptation strategy, while also addressing its environmental impacts. The article reviews existing literature on the carbon intensity of ski tourism and examines the commitments made under the Paris Agreement regarding emission reductions. It further analyzes national climate strategies and how the tourism sector, particularly ski tourism, is integrated into these frameworks. The findings aim to assess whether the current plans align with the targets set by the Paris Agreement and contribute to the sustainability of ski tourism in the face of climate change.
