This document is a pilot study published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing, which evaluates the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of I-PASS-structured bedside nursing handovers. The study aims to assess improvements in handover quality and patient trust in nurses by moving handovers from nurses' offices to patients' bedsides. The design of the study is a Type-1 effectiveness–implementation hybrid study, utilizing a simple interrupted time series with three measurement points before and after the implementation of bedside handovers. The results indicate significant improvements in handover quality, although the duration of handovers increased. The study also identifies obstacles faced by nurses in implementing this practice, suggesting that training alone may not be sufficient. The findings advocate for extending bedside nursing handovers to other units and developing sustainable strategies for their implementation. The relevance to clinical practice highlights improved patient involvement and safety during nursing handovers.
