This document is an observability case study detailing how ecobee's engineering teams adopted Honeycomb for performance optimization. The case study outlines the challenges faced by the teams, including the need for greater visibility into system latency and the decision-making process regarding whether to build or buy observability tools. The teams initially utilized Prometheus and Grafana for monitoring but found limitations in performance tuning. After adopting Honeycomb, they experienced significant improvements in their ability to drill down into performance issues, allowing them to make optimizations measured in milliseconds. The case study also discusses the onboarding process for teams using Honeycomb's Free plan, which facilitated collaborative learning and tool adoption. Additionally, it highlights the use of Honeycomb's Service Level Objectives (SLO) feature, which has streamlined the process of monitoring production performance and aligning engineering efforts with customer needs. Overall, the case study emphasizes the importance of effective observability in enhancing user experience and operational efficiency.
