Cloud Migration Case Study of Payroll Enterprise

This case study details the migration of over 4,500 virtual machines (VMs) from VMware to OpenStack by a leading US payroll enterprise in collaboration with Hystax. The project utilized Hystax Acura Cloud Migration software to facilitate a seamless transition over a two-year period, beginning with an initial phase of 500 VM migrations. The primary objective was to execute this migration without downtime or loss of critical IT workloads, particularly focusing on Windows VMs initially, followed by Linux machines. The study outlines the challenges faced, including the need for a reliable and automated migration solution and the involvement of multiple departments. Hystax provided a comprehensive solution that ensured full automation, consistent replication, and flexible orchestration, allowing for rapid cutover to the target OpenStack environment. The successful migration has reduced the company's dependency on VMware and initiated a proof of concept for disaster recovery solutions, demonstrating the effectiveness of Hystax's offerings.
