This case study details the operational improvements at Nucor Steel Arkansas following the implementation of a Hyster ReachStacker for loading heavy steel coils into railcars. Previously, the facility utilized straddle cranes, which posed safety risks to operators who were often positioned beneath suspended loads. In 2022, the company sought a solution to enhance both safety and efficiency in their coil handling operations. The ReachStacker, equipped with specialized attachments, allows for side-loading, which significantly reduces the number of required operators and equipment. The transition to this new system has resulted in loading speeds that are up to ten times faster than before, while also improving operator safety by eliminating the need to work under suspended loads. The study highlights the collaborative efforts between Nucor and Hyster in customizing the ReachStacker for their specific operational needs, leading to enhanced visibility and control during loading tasks. Training for operators was streamlined due to similarities in controls with existing lift trucks, further facilitating the transition.
