This case study details the implementation of Icinga Monitoring at the Institute for Medical Education (IML) of the University of Bern. The IML, a center for medical education, faced challenges with their previous monitoring tool, Sensu v1, which became incompatible with their infrastructure. The team sought an open-source solution that would allow for full automation and ease of integration. They chose Icinga, which met their requirements for notification features, integrated performance graphs, and role-based access control. The implementation process involved automating infrastructure rollout and creating custom checks for various services, including web services and databases. The team developed plugins for tailored monitoring and utilized Icinga's powerful filtering and dashboard capabilities to enhance their operational efficiency. Since the migration to Icinga, the team has reported improved access to real-time data and streamlined management of their virtual machines and network infrastructure, demonstrating the effectiveness of Icinga in meeting their monitoring needs.
