Dane County EMS Data-Driven Wellness Initiatives

This document is a case study detailing the initiatives undertaken by Dane County Emergency Management EMS Division to enhance provider wellness and combat the opioid epidemic through data utilization. The county, serving a population of nearly 588,000, faced significant challenges related to provider mental health and rising overdose rates. In response, multiple layers of support were introduced, including a Peer Support Network and Continuum Alerts to facilitate immediate assistance for EMS crews after stressful incidents. Additionally, the county implemented harm reduction strategies such as distributing Heroin and Opiate Prevention & Education (HOPE) Kits and installing harm reduction vending machines outside high-volume hospitals. These initiatives have led to measurable outcomes, including a reduction in EMS responses to suspected overdoses and increased engagement with peer support resources. The case study emphasizes the importance of data in guiding these efforts and fostering collaboration among EMS, hospitals, and public health agencies.
