Improving Insurance Affordability Through Land Use Planning

This report, commissioned by IAG and undertaken by AECOM Australia, presents a detailed examination of the enablers and barriers to incorporating natural disaster risk into land use planning in Australia. It compiles perspectives from various stakeholders, including government entities at all levels, the insurance sector, property developers, and community organizations. The report identifies six significant challenges faced by the land planning system, such as the inconsistent integration of natural hazard information and the lack of a cohesive framework for disaster resilience. Additionally, it outlines ten recommendations aimed at enhancing decision-making processes for more resilient land use strategies. These recommendations emphasize the need for collective action among stakeholders and propose the development of guidelines, legislative frameworks, and capacity-building programs to address the systemic challenges of disaster resilience in land use planning. The report serves as a critical resource for policymakers seeking to improve community safety and insurance affordability in the face of natural disasters.
