This research article presents a function-oriented development (FOD) approach for vehicle development from a human-technology-organization (HTO) perspective. It addresses the limitations of the traditional component-oriented approach in the automotive industry, which is increasingly challenged by new technologies and complex product architectures. The objective is to conceptualize a holistic FOD framework that integrates technological, human, and organizational factors to enhance adaptability to changing customer requirements. The methodology is based on the requirements, functions, logic, product (RFLP) approach of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and incorporates human-centered design (HCD) principles. Preliminary findings identify significant HTO factors relevant for implementing the FOD framework, which will be further validated through empirical studies. The anticipated outcomes include guidelines for constructing a standardized data model and an implementation strategy for FOD, aimed at benefiting both practitioners in vehicle development and researchers in MBSE methodologies.
