This case study details Wärtsilä's collaboration with a Japanese partner to develop a new ship engine, necessitating effective data exchange between different CAD systems: PTC’s Pro/ENGINEER and Wärtsilä’s I-DEAS. To facilitate this, Wärtsilä selected Proficiency to convert feature-based models between these systems. The decision aims to save over 20,000 hours of manual labor by eliminating the need for creating master drawings from 3D models. The project focuses on delivering accurate 2D drawings and a 3D feature-based representation of the engine efficiently. Traditional methods were found inadequate, as they produced non-parametric models that required extensive manual recreation. Proficiency enables automatic conversion while preserving design intelligence, significantly reducing drawing creation time. The anticipated outcome includes improved competitiveness through efficient adaptation of engine designs for specific licensee requirements. The case study outlines the strategic benefits of this approach, including timely delivery of 3D models to shipbuilding licensees.
