Optimizing da Vinci Instrument Inventory Management

This case study details the implementation of lean inventory management practices at Salina Regional Health Center, which significantly improved their da Vinci surgical program. The center, located in Salina, Kansas, faced challenges related to high carrying costs, excess inventory, and a lack of standardized return merchandise authorization (RMA) processes. In collaboration with the Intuitive Genesis team, the center developed a more efficient inventory management system that included best practices for standardization and reprocessing. Key changes included eliminating non-standardized tray configurations, optimizing preference cards, and establishing a clear PAR level process. These improvements not only reduced unnecessary reprocessing costs by over $22,000 but also helped avoid approximately $90,000 in costs associated with broken instruments. The program experienced a growth of 26% in the number of da Vinci surgeries performed, demonstrating the effectiveness of the implemented strategies. The case study emphasizes the importance of aligning team priorities and utilizing real-time data for ongoing inventory management.
