This case study details the implementation of the Vortex Flow system in the world's largest raw wastewater energy transfer project at Toronto Western Hospital (TWH). The project, initiated by Noventa, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs by utilizing recovered heat from wastewater. The Vortex Flow system addresses two significant challenges: energy dissipation and odour suppression, particularly hydrogen sulfide gas, which poses health risks. The system effectively guides wastewater flow through a vortex to minimize turbulence and energy impact while suppressing odours. The installation process involved constructing a 120 ft drop shaft and integrating the system with Toronto's sewer network. The Vortex Flow unit is designed for low maintenance and has been recognized for its innovative design. The project, which began in June 2021, is expected to be operational by late Q1 or Q2 2025, and it represents a significant advancement in energy-efficient heating and cooling methods for municipal facilities.
