This case study details the implementation of revenue assurance processes at Commonwealth Edison (ComEd), a major utility provider in Illinois. Following the Energy Infrastructure Modernization Act, ComEd deployed smart meters to enhance operational efficiency and reduce non-technical energy losses. The partnership with Itron introduced the Operations Optimizer, an analytics platform designed to automate the analysis of smart meter data. The study outlines the pilot program initiated in 2012, which successfully identified suspicious consumption patterns and improved billing accuracy. ComEd's objectives included achieving mandated reductions in unaccounted for energy (UFE) and consumption on inactive meters (CIM). The results showed significant improvements, with ComEd exceeding its targets four years ahead of schedule. The case study also discusses the ongoing challenges of managing theft and unauthorized consumption, highlighting the importance of continuous monitoring and the role of advanced analytics in maintaining operational integrity. Overall, the document emphasizes the successful integration of technology in utility management.
