Innovative Flip Placard Design for Fuel Haulers

This case study details the challenges faced by a Midwestern fuel hauler regarding the durability and compliance of their flip placards used for hazardous material identification. The placards were deteriorating due to harsh conditions, leading to issues such as ink degradation, metal abrasion, and hinge wear, which raised safety and compliance concerns. In response, J. J. Keller & Associates, Inc. engaged in a collaborative innovation effort to redesign the placards. The new design features anti-vibration rubber bumpers and dual-clip retainers, significantly enhancing durability and usability. The redesigned placards last three times longer than previous models, resulting in reduced maintenance and replacement costs. The study emphasizes the importance of understanding customer needs and the effectiveness of a hands-on, iterative approach in product development. The outcome not only improved operational efficiency for the customer but also strengthened the relationship between the hauler and J. J. Keller.
