This case study details the implementation of John Crane dry gas seals at a Natural Gas Liquid (NGL) extraction plant located in the United Arab Emirates. The facility processes associated gas from nearby oil fields and faced challenges with emissions and operational costs due to the use of wet seals in their compressor stations. The objective was to reduce emissions and enhance reliability and operational safety. The retrofit involved replacing existing floating oil ring wet seals with dry gas seals, specifically utilizing Type 28AT and Type 28XP seals for the compressors. The results demonstrated a significant reduction in CO2 emissions by 97%, alongside improved reliability, as compressors operated for over 10 years without major issues post-retrofit. The study outlines the technical challenges faced during installation, including space constraints and the need for new seal housing, and describes the successful startup and commissioning of the upgraded compressors.
