De Portola Middle School Roof Replacement Project

This case study details the roof replacement project at De Portola Middle School, which involved replacing deteriorating three-tab shingles with a more durable roofing solution. The project was initiated due to the weakening transition point between asphalt shingles and a low-slope built-up roof, which led to leaks. The architect, Ruth Fajarit-Davis from Zagrodnik + Thomas Architects, sought a single style system that would enhance aesthetics and ensure durability. The solution involved a PVC membrane and PVC Profile system recommended by JM representative Charles Laughery. The project faced challenges due to the steep slope of some roofs, but it was completed successfully, transforming the facility's appearance. The new roof not only met Energy Star and California Title 24 specifications but also improved natural light in classrooms, significantly enhancing the building's performance and aesthetics. The project was well-received by the San Diego Unified School District, with project manager Robert Morris expressing satisfaction with the results.
