This case study details the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning at HM Land Registry (HMLR) to automate the document comparison process. HMLR, responsible for safeguarding land ownership in England and Wales, aimed to enhance efficiency and reduce costs associated with manual document reviews. The study outlines the challenges faced by caseworkers in comparing lengthy and complex legal documents, which often resulted in time-consuming and error-prone tasks. The project involved creating an AI solution that could identify discrepancies in transfer deeds, streamline workflows, and improve the accuracy of document comparisons. Key steps included exploratory data analysis, evaluating optical character recognition (OCR) tools, and developing custom AI modules for legal language analysis. The resulting web application significantly reduced the time required for document review, enabling caseworkers to focus on more valuable tasks. The AI tool is now operational, capturing data for future improvements based on user feedback.
