Gothenburg Congestion Charging System Replacement Project

This technical report outlines the replacement project for the Gothenburg Congestion Charging system, which Kapsch TrafficCom initiated in 2022 under a contract with Trafikverket. The project encompasses four main parts, including development, installation, and technical operation of the new system. The existing congestion charging system, operational since 2013, consists of 85 charging points across 138 lanes, generating significant revenue from vehicle taxes during weekdays. The project aims to enhance the system's capabilities by implementing a true Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system that accurately detects vehicle passages in both directions. The installation and commissioning phases will occur over several months, involving extensive validation processes. The report details the challenges faced during installation, including the replacement of tolling stations and the need for thorough inspections. Technical operations are planned to last for a minimum of ten years, with options for extensions, ensuring the system's ongoing functionality and maintenance.
