This case study details the efforts of a multi-hospital health system to enhance patient access to care by addressing scheduling complexities. The system identified three key priorities to improve appointment scheduling: leveraging technology for self-scheduling, simplifying scheduling decision-tree algorithms, and enabling cross-departmental referral scheduling. The study outlines the challenges faced, including confusing access for patients, high no-show rates, and limited self-scheduling options. Initial implementation results from pilot clinics showed significant improvements, with online appointment scheduling increasing and no-show rates decreasing. The case study emphasizes the importance of prioritizing a few focused changes to create a patient-centric access process, ultimately aiming to enhance patient loyalty and trust. It highlights the need for healthcare systems to adapt to consumer expectations and streamline access to care, thereby reducing inefficiencies and improving overall patient experience.
