This report analyzes the operational gaps in government agencies regarding AI governance and data security as they approach 2026. It identifies that while government organizations are aware of the critical responsibilities they hold for sensitive data and equitable service delivery, they are significantly lagging behind global benchmarks in AI governance capabilities. The report highlights that only 5% of government agencies conduct AI impact assessments, and a mere 10% maintain centralized AI data controls. The findings are based on a survey of 225 security, IT, compliance, and risk leaders, including 21 from government organizations. Five predictions are made regarding the future state of government agencies, emphasizing that without operational governance mechanisms, AI frameworks will remain aspirational, sensitive data will lack adequate controls, and agencies will be unprepared for AI-related incidents. The report concludes with strategic recommendations for addressing these gaps and enhancing operational readiness for AI governance and data security.
