This technical report evaluates the readiness of PVC pipes for the hydrogen economy, focusing on their suitability for hydrogen transport within the existing natural gas grid. The study, conducted by researchers from Kiwa Technology and the European Council of Vinyl Manufacturers, outlines the mechanical suitability of installed PVC joints and the permeation behavior of various PVC pipe types. Over 80,000 km of PVC-U and PVC-Hi pipes are currently in use in the Netherlands. The report presents findings from permeation measurements conducted on both new and used PVC pipes and joints, assessing their performance under hydrogen exposure. The results indicate that PVC joints maintain mechanical integrity and meet current leak requirements, supporting their continued use for hydrogen distribution. Additionally, the report details experimental methods for measuring permeation rates and angular deflection, providing a comprehensive analysis of the materials' performance in hydrogen environments.
