This case study outlines the development and implementation of a security awareness program at Mitre 10, a prominent home improvement brand in New Zealand. The initiative was led by Brad Ward Able, who recognized the need for a structured cybersecurity approach upon joining the company. Prior to his arrival, there was no formal cybersecurity team or training in place. The partnership with KnowBe4 facilitated the creation of a creative and engaging training program that significantly reduced the likelihood of successful phishing attacks. The case study details the transition from traditional training methods to a more interactive approach, incorporating humor and competition to foster a culture of security awareness among employees. Additionally, it highlights the use of KnowBe4’s PhishER tool, which automates the reporting and response to suspicious emails, saving time and enhancing security efficiency. The results indicate a substantial decrease in phishing susceptibility among staff, demonstrating the effectiveness of the implemented strategies.
