This case study outlines a collaborative effort between a major manufacturer of laser-cutting machines and Kollmorgen to enhance machine performance while addressing specific challenges. The primary objective was to design a compact, high-speed machine that could accommodate extreme throughput requirements. The initial challenge involved finding suitable motors that fit the established design footprint while delivering adequate power. Additionally, the manufacturer sought to create a lower-cost version of the machine to expand its market reach. The partnership resulted in the development of ironcore motors and an anti-cogging solution, which significantly improved machine performance and reduced costs. The case study details various achievements, including enabling advanced manufacturing capabilities for jet engines and simplifying motion tuning for gantry arms. The successful implementation of these solutions was supported by on-site collaboration with a Kollmorgen engineer, ensuring timely completion and performance optimization of the new machine version.
