This case study details the journey of Central Elementary School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which transitioned from being classified as a 'full support school' to achieving recognition as a 'Science of Reading Spotlight School' by the Alabama Department of Education. The study outlines the challenges faced by the school, particularly the low reading proficiency rates among kindergarten students, and the subsequent implementation of the Lexia LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) professional learning program. The principal, Jerry Collins, initiated this program to enhance literacy outcomes by training educators and administrators in effective reading instruction techniques. The results indicate significant improvements, with over 74% of kindergarten students now proficient in reading. The case study emphasizes the importance of leadership in adopting educational frameworks and the positive impact of comprehensive training on student literacy achievements.
