This case study details the implementation of Lexia® PowerUp Literacy® at Niles Middle School in Ohio, focusing on how teacher autonomy contributed to improved literacy outcomes. Assistant Principal Leah Marsh, who transitioned from high school teaching to administration, recognized the need for a more effective literacy program to address gaps exacerbated by the pandemic. The previous program was deemed insufficient, prompting educators to seek a solution that would engage students and provide real-time data. The introduction of PowerUp allowed teachers to integrate the program according to their classroom needs, fostering buy-in and ownership among staff. The case study outlines how the program was utilized across different tiers of students, with teachers reporting increased engagement and positive feedback from students. Initial results indicated significant improvements in literacy skills, with many students advancing in comprehension, grammar, and word study. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of ongoing support and monitoring to sustain student progress and address literacy challenges effectively.
