This case study details the experience of the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office in Texas as it adapts to increasing digital evidence requests. Lucas Flores, the sole digital forensics investigator, faced a significant rise in requests from one or two devices per month to as many as 30. The study outlines the challenges of managing digital evidence using outdated methods such as paper forms and spreadsheets, which proved unsustainable. To address these issues, Flores implemented Magnet ATLAS, a lab management software that streamlined the intake and processing of digital evidence. The software allowed for remote submissions, significantly reducing the time required for intake from an hour to just five minutes. The case study highlights the efficiency gained through ATLAS, which enabled better organization and tracking of evidence, ultimately supporting the Sheriff’s Office in its mission to enforce laws and protect the community. The findings reflect a successful return on investment and improved workflow within the department.
