This white paper presents a performance study of Mantle's P2X material in comparison to standard P20 tooling steel. The objective is to evaluate the machinability and material properties of P2X, which has been formulated to deliver performance equivalent or superior to P20 tooling steel. The study includes detailed assessments of various machining operations such as milling, drilling, grinding, and welding, documenting that P2X maintains stability and flatness during these processes. Additionally, the paper discusses the material's performance during EDM operations, noting that it shows no wire breakage and maintains comparable surface finishes. The corrosion resistance of P2X is also evaluated, revealing minor corrosion compared to significant corrosion in P20 steel after water submersion tests. The findings indicate that P2X is suitable for tooling applications, demonstrating lower wear rates in production runs and compatibility with standard machining processes without the need for additional investments.
