This case study details the implementation of Mantle's TrueShape™ technology by a global medical device manufacturer to significantly reduce the lead time for prototyping high-temperature plastic parts. The objective was to create cavity and core tool-steel mold inserts that could be produced quickly and effectively. The process involved 3D printing the mold inserts from a CAD file, which took just over 2.5 days, followed by an additional 5.5 days for mold preparation. This approach resulted in a total lead time of 8 days, compared to the traditional 7 weeks, achieving an 80% reduction in time. The printed inserts met the required tolerance and surface finish standards without the need for additional finishing, demonstrating equivalent performance to conventionally manufactured tools. The case study also highlights the challenges faced in the medical device industry regarding the use of durable materials for prototyping and the benefits of using advanced 3D printing technology to overcome these challenges.
