This white paper details how Mastercard assisted Blenheim Palace in implementing circular economy initiatives that significantly reduced costs associated with beverage packaging. Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, faced high annual expenses due to single-use cups, spending over £100,000. By introducing a deposit return scheme (DRS) with reusable cups, the palace achieved a 50 percent reduction in packaging costs. The paper outlines the operational mechanics of the DRS, including the use of RFID-enabled cups and reverse vending machines for efficient returns. It also discusses the environmental impact, noting a reduction of 1,150 kg of carbon emissions and the prevention of 320,000 single-use cups from reaching landfills. Furthermore, the paper emphasizes the importance of consumer experience and data-driven management in the success of circular initiatives. The findings suggest that organizations can benefit financially and operationally by adopting circular economy principles, aligning with consumer values, and leveraging technology effectively.
