This technical report presents findings from a study on energy sector requirements for alternative drive systems in public transport, specifically focusing on e-buses in the VOR region of Austria. Conducted as part of the Interreg Project ATHU114 'Low Carb Mobility', the study aimed to analyze the feasibility and implications of integrating battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles into public transport systems. The analysis involved collaboration between MENTZ GmbH and the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), utilizing the GENIOS optimization software to perform vehicle scheduling calculations. The study evaluated two main areas: Greater Schwechat and Northern Burgenland, where various operational scenarios were modeled to assess the impact of electric vehicle usage on public transport routes. The report outlines the methodologies employed, including timetable creation and depot selection, and discusses the challenges posed by energy-intensive vehicles in relation to existing infrastructure. Additionally, the report compares the operational viability of battery electric and hydrogen-powered buses, highlighting key findings and recommendations for future implementations.
