This technical report discusses recent advancements in terahertz (THz) source architecture by researchers at IMRA America. The report details the development of a new THz source capable of delivering both high output power and spectral purity, addressing long-standing challenges in the field. The architecture combines a resonant tunneling diode (RTD) with a photomixed dual-wavelength Brillouin laser and a low-loss waveguide circulator, achieving a gain of over 40dB at 260GHz. The report emphasizes the significance of injection locking in enhancing the spectral purity of the RTD, which has traditionally struggled with narrow frequency resolution. Furthermore, it presents the first-ever characterization of residual phase noise in an injection-locked RTD at THz frequencies. The findings indicate that the architecture is scalable beyond 260GHz, potentially reaching 1THz and beyond, which could have significant implications for applications in wireless communications and precision sensing. The report concludes with a discussion on future research directions to further enhance THz technology.
