County Conservation District Dust Control Project

This document is a project spotlight that outlines the County Conservation District's initiative to control dust on an unpaved recreational road in Pennsylvania. The project aimed to protect local ecology and waterways from dust and sediment generated by vehicle traffic. The County Conservation District partnered with Midwest to evaluate the effectiveness of EnviroKleen®, an eco-friendly solution. Two installation methods were assessed: blending EnviroKleen® into the upper three inches of the newly placed aggregate and applying it to the surface. Results from silt load tests indicated a reduction in dust emissions by over 95% for the blended method and 85% for the topical application compared to untreated sections. The project faced challenges such as preserving road integrity and ensuring compliance with environmental requirements. The successful trial demonstrated effective methods for sustainable dust control, providing county conservation agencies with validated approaches for maintaining environmental standards while managing recreational roadways.
