Dust Control and Maintenance Reduction in Ecologically Sensitive Roads

This technical report presents the findings of a year-long dust control field trial conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on aggregate-surfaced roads at a National Wildlife Refuge in Texas. The trial utilized EnviroKleen®, a product selected for its environmentally friendly chemistry, to assess its effectiveness in reducing dust emissions and maintenance needs. The study monitored performance and environmental safety over 12 months, focusing on dust production, road surface conditions, and impacts on aquatic organisms and vegetation. Results indicated a significant improvement in road conditions, achieving over 95% dust control and reducing maintenance activities by more than 75% compared to untreated sections. Additionally, no adverse environmental effects were observed on aquatic life or roadside vegetation. The report outlines the challenges faced, the solutions implemented, and the successful outcomes, demonstrating EnviroKleen® as an effective solution for managing unpaved roads in ecologically sensitive areas.
