This technical report details the gravel runway stabilization project utilizing EK35® in North Slope, Alaska, aimed at enhancing runway performance for an Arctic community reliant on air transport. The existing runway faced significant surface degradation due to poor aggregate quality, thawing permafrost, and harsh environmental conditions, leading to unsafe operations and closures. The project involved a comprehensive multi-component solution, including laboratory design testing to determine the optimal volume of EK35®, excavation of the runway, installation of insulation and drainage systems, and resurfacing with crushed aggregate. The application of EK35® transitioned from a topical to a blended installation, allowing for continuous runway operations during construction. Results indicated a 37% increase in structural strength and no interruptions to flight schedules, restoring safe operational conditions for year-round aircraft movements. The project highlights the effectiveness of EK35® in improving marginal aggregate performance in extreme environments, providing valuable lessons for future installations.
