Sustainable Road Management Project Spotlight

This case study details a project undertaken by the Public Works Department (PWD) in Georgia to address challenges in maintaining unpaved roads. The PWD faced issues with traditional calcium chloride dust control methods, which were inconsistent and led to resident complaints. In collaboration with Midwest, the PWD initiated a fines-preservation program utilizing EnviroKleen®, a non-chloride synthetic binder aimed at long-term dust suppression. The program resulted in over 85% dust reduction and received positive feedback from residents. The case study outlines the challenges faced by the PWD, including the need for effective dust control and environmental considerations. It describes the solution implemented, which included training for PWD staff and ongoing performance monitoring. Results indicated significant improvements in air quality and road conditions, with a roadmap for future expansion of the fines preservation program. This initiative exemplifies a shift towards more sustainable and effective road management practices.
