This case study presents Mistral's design and development of a Ka Band Cloud Radar Receiver and Up-converter system for a leading space research agency. The customer required a robust system to monitor and analyze cloud properties, necessitating a built-to-spec project that included various modules such as OCXO, PLDRO, and transmitter receivers. Mistral conducted a detailed requirement analysis, focusing on signal flow, architecture, and specifications of the sub-system, as well as the design approach and mechanical housing. The architecture integrates RF-Line replaceable modules within a rugged chassis. The system underwent extensive testing, including functional and environmental qualification tests, to meet EMI/EMC standards as per MIL-STD-461-E. Challenges included achieving low phase noise and receiver noise figures, which were addressed through careful selection of components. The project resulted in a fully integrated solution that complied with all functional and environmental standards, showcasing Mistral's expertise in radar technology.
