This case study details Mistral's development of a low-cost, low-power handheld GPS device tailored for marine navigation. The design process involved collaboration among six teams across four geographical locations, ensuring effective communication and risk mitigation from concept through to production. The device was required to meet marine regulatory standards as defined in IEC 945. Key challenges included achieving a compact design that maintained mechanical integrity while ensuring signal quality and compliance with electromagnetic interference standards. The final product featured a 12-channel GPS with a passive antenna, a USB interface for data storage, and a 3.5" advanced trans-reflective LCD for visibility in bright sunlight. The project culminated in successful large-volume production, with the device recognized for its innovative design at the International Boat Show in Geneva in 2003. Mistral's expertise facilitated a rapid development cycle, allowing for subsequent adaptations of the design on the same platform.
