This case study details Mistral's approach to re-engineering an obsolete locomotive controller. The objective was to redesign the control unit to ensure compatibility with existing legacy systems while utilizing modern components. The re-engineered board was based on the Pentium MMX processor and supported proprietary backplane architecture, enhancing connectivity options including wired Ethernet and RS-232. The design process involved modifying the existing logic to accommodate the new board, ensuring minimal impact on the overall system. Key challenges included maintaining signal integrity, thermal management, and compliance with environmental standards. Mistral conducted rigorous testing to guarantee reliability, achieving an uptime of 99.994%. The study outlines the methodologies employed, including pre and post-layout analysis for signal integrity and thermal analysis, which were critical in meeting the stringent requirements of the application. The successful re-engineering project positions the customer to consider this design for future locomotive control units.
