This technical report presents the development of a hydrogen supply and safety system for a two-stroke marine diesel engine, specifically the MES test engine 4S50ME-T. The objective of this work is to clarify the applicability of hydrogen as a fuel in marine engines, addressing the challenges posed by the International Maritime Organization's GHG emission reduction targets. The report outlines the collaboration between MAN Energy Solutions and Mitsui E&S in converting one cylinder of the test engine to operate on hydrogen while the others continued with diesel. It details the design and implementation of a four-stage gas compressor system for high-pressure hydrogen supply, along with safety measures compliant with the ME-GI and IGF codes. The report also discusses the innovative nitrogen ventilation system and the development of a new hydrogen gas detector suitable for use in nitrogen environments. The results indicate stable hydrogen supply and operation, showcasing the potential for hydrogen-fueled marine engines.
