This technical report presents a pilot study on an AI-powered surgical coaching tool aimed at enhancing non-technical skills in robotic surgery. The study highlights the challenges faced by trainees in achieving proficiency due to the steep learning curve associated with robotic procedures, particularly in pediatric surgery. The tool analyzes intraoperative conversations to provide real-time feedback on communication and teamwork, integrating heart rate variability tracking to assess mental workload and stress regulation. The collaboration between mpathic and Seattle Children’s Hospital focuses on creating a minimally intrusive, context-aware feedback system that supports surgical training and promotes a safety culture. Preliminary results indicate that the tool can effectively capture and quantify intraoperative communication behaviors, revealing patterns that inform the refinement of the AI model. The findings suggest potential applications for improving surgical training, optimizing team performance, and reducing communication-related risks in the operating room. This study sets the groundwork for further validation and broader implementation of the coaching tool.
