This technical report presents a case study on implementing a microgrid energy solution for a gated community in Nigeria, highlighting the transition from a conventional diesel-powered system to a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative. The report outlines the challenges faced by remote communities in accessing reliable energy and the high costs associated with diesel generation. It details the configuration of the microgrid, which includes photovoltaic (PV) panels and a battery energy storage system (BESS), allowing the community to generate 31% of its energy from renewables. The analysis compares operational costs, demonstrating a significant reduction from €313k to €205k annually, alongside a payback period of 5.5 years for the initial investment of €732k. The report emphasizes the benefits of energy cost optimization and reduced carbon emissions, making a strong case for the adoption of microgrid technologies in similar contexts.
