This white paper presents findings from a study conducted by researchers from Nanyang Technological University and Research Network, focusing on the effects of social media usage on the self-worth and mental health of young individuals aged 13 to 25. The study surveyed over 500 participants in Singapore and Australia, revealing that a significant percentage of respondents reported difficulties with focus and emotional fatigue linked to prolonged social media engagement. The research utilized an AI-driven interviewing platform to facilitate in-depth discussions about attention and well-being. Key findings indicate that many young people experience negative emotional reactions, including anxiety and feelings of inadequacy, particularly due to peer comparisons on social media. The paper also highlights concerns from both youth and parents regarding the impact of social media on educational success and cognitive processing. Recommendations for redesigning social media platforms to prioritize user well-being are discussed, emphasizing the need for safeguards to enhance attention management among young users.
