This report presents the findings of the Northern Territory Low Emission Carbon Capture Storage and Utilisation (CCUS) Hub Business Case project, led by CSIRO. The project aims to assess the viability of a large-scale low-emission CCUS Hub on the Middle Arm of Darwin Harbour, in collaboration with the NT Government and industry stakeholders. The report details the technical and logistical considerations surrounding CO2 shipping, which is crucial for the development of CCUS hubs globally. It outlines the carbon capture, transport, and storage (CCTS) value chain, emphasizing the importance of CO2 shipping as a mechanism for jurisdictions with limited geological storage capacity. The report also includes a high-level assessment of the costs associated with CO2 shipping from Japan to Darwin, estimating costs between A$113/T and A$228/T, influenced by transport volumes and ship capacity. The findings aim to support the transition to a sustainable industry in the Northern Territory, aligning with the region's net-zero emissions target by 2050.
