Overview

The National Democratic Institute (NDI) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization based in the United States, established in 1983. It focuses on supporting democratic institutions and practices globally, having worked in over 132 countries. NDI engages with political parties, governments, parliaments, and civic organizations to promote citizen participation, accountability, and openness in governance. The organization receives funding from U.S. Federal agencies, including the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Department of State (DOS), as well as various international partners. NDI employs a multinational approach to democratic development, emphasizing that while there is no singular democratic model, certain core principles are universally shared among democracies. The organization has also been a pioneer in integrating technology into its efforts to enhance democratic processes. Recent initiatives include conducting comprehensive political surveys in Ukraine to analyze long-term data trends, which are intended to inform high-level stakeholders and support ongoing democratic engagement.
