GIS Implementation for Basildon Council Weed Control

This case study outlines the implementation of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) by Basildon Council to enhance their weed control program. Basildon, located in Essex, England, has a population of over 107,000 and was established as a new town in 1948. The council faced challenges in managing numerous small parcels of land across the borough, necessitating a detailed understanding of land ownership and surface types for effective grounds maintenance tendering. To address this, Basildon Council utilized NEC's Data Analysis and Modelling Service to create a definitive layer of land ownership and classify land types using the Ordnance Survey MasterMap Topography Layer®. The resulting report included both maps and tabular data, facilitating easier tendering processes. The proactive approach is expected to lead to improved resident satisfaction and operational efficiencies within the council's maintenance programming. The data generated is also reusable for future projects within the cleansing department.
