This research article investigates the impact of verbal agitation in people with dementia (PwD) on the mental health of informal caregivers. Verbal agitation, which includes behaviors such as cursing and screaming, can significantly distress caregivers, leading to mental health issues like depression and anxiety. The study involved interviews with 11 informal caregivers from South Korea and the USA, focusing on their experiences and coping strategies related to verbal agitation. The findings highlight the need for tailored technological support to assist caregivers in managing their mental well-being. The article outlines specific design opportunities categorized into four types of support: in-situ support, social support, information support, and coordination support. It emphasizes the importance of addressing the unique challenges caregivers face before, during, and after incidents of verbal agitation. The research aims to contribute to the development of systems that enhance the well-being of informal caregivers, ultimately improving care for individuals with dementia.
