This research report presents findings from a study conducted by Stanford Professor Chuck Eesley, which examines the effectiveness of team-based learning in virtual environments. The study indicates that learners who engage in team-based online courses demonstrate significantly higher levels of engagement compared to those who study individually. Specifically, team members are five times more likely to sign on frequently, twice as likely to remain active on the learning platform, and three times more likely to contribute to discussions. Furthermore, learners in teams are 79% more likely to enroll in additional courses and 81% more likely to recommend the course to others. The report also highlights the positive impact of mentorship within teams, noting that the presence of a mentor enhances engagement and performance. The research utilized data from 26,248 students enrolled in a Technology Entrepreneurship course and employed a multivariate regression analysis to assess various engagement metrics. The findings suggest that incorporating teams and mentorship in online learning can lead to improved learner outcomes.
