Benefis Health System OR Workflow Improvement Case Study

This case study details the implementation of Omnicell’s XT Anesthesia Workstation (AWS) at Benefis Health System in Great Falls, Montana. The primary challenge faced was inefficient operating room (OR) workflows and frequent stockouts of medications due to a labor-intensive process reliant on case trays. Prior to AWS, the preparation of over 50 trays daily consumed significant time and led to operational disruptions. The transition to AWS was initiated by strong support from OR leadership and aimed to improve medication access while reducing risks associated with diversion. Key outcomes include a 94% medication scan compliance rate and a 4% reduction in inventory discrepancies. Furthermore, the implementation enhanced workflow efficiency and patient safety through improved inventory visibility and streamlined access to medications. Continuous collaboration between pharmacy and anesthesia teams played a crucial role in the success of this initiative, fostering communication and training that facilitated a smooth transition to the new system.
